Our Story

Pmass, founded in 2023, represents a groundbreaking advancement in the field of engineering simulation. As the world’s first peridynamic-based engineering simulation software fully implemented on the cloud, Pmass is revolutionizing the way engineers and designers approach the optimization of engineering structures and the understanding of their failure behaviors.

Peridynamics stands out as a superior method for solving complex engineering problems that traditional techniques struggle with. Unlike FEA, which can be limited in its ability to model discontinuities and fracture behavior, peridynamics excels in these areas, providing more accurate and reliable results.

Despite its growing popularity in academic research, the industrial application of peridynamics has been limited due to the lack of commercial software tools. Pmass bridges this gap, providing the first commercially available platform for peridynamic analysis. Our software empowers engineers and researchers to apply this advanced method in practical, real-world scenarios, driving innovation and enhancing the reliability of engineering structures.

Pmass was established by a diverse team comprising mechanical engineers with expertise in computational solid mechanics and peridynamics, computer scientists, and interdisciplinary researchers. This collaboration aims to merge the disciplines of physics-based simulation, scientific computing, and software product development.

The Power of Peridynamics

Peridynamics, a new continuum mechanics formulation developed by Dr. Stewart Silling, unifies the mechanics of continuous media, cracks, and discrete particles. This method is particularly powerful for solving problems that conventional techniques, such as finite element analysis (FEA), struggle with or cannot solve, including fracture analysis. Although peridynamics is often more computationally efficient than FEA for certain issues, such as modeling arbitrary crack growth, it can be computationally demanding and requires substantial computing resources. However, its suitability for parallel programming environments can significantly reduce run times, depending on the available computing resources.

In recent years, peridynamics has gained popularity due to its potential to address some of the limitations of traditional FEA. The number of peridynamic researchers and publications has increased rapidly. Despite its growing popularity in the academic community, its industrial application remains extremely limited, primarily because no commercial software tools for peridynamic analysis are available until the introduction of Pmass.

With the increasing adoption of cloud-based services, which offer numerous advantages such as lower costs, easier maintenance, and enhanced flexibility and scalability, peridynamic analysis stands to benefit greatly from cloud computing. Pmass has created a 100% online simulation platform that enables engineers worldwide to access peridynamic simulations. Developed based on the most general form of peridynamics, non-ordinary state-based peridynamics (NOSB-PD), Pmass integrates constitutive and damage models from classical mechanics theory. Inherent material damage modeling in Pmass facilitates the simulation of fracture initiation and propagation along arbitrary paths, eliminating the need for separate crack growth treatments. Additionally, Pmass supports the consideration of highly heterogeneous material constituents and complex cracking mechanisms.

How It Works?

Technology and Infrastructure

Powered by AWS Cloud Computing

Source code: Pmass source code is developed based on NOSB-PD using C++ script and supports multiprocessing.

Data Storage: Pmass uses AWS DynamoDB to store user and project data. Pmass uses AWS S3 to store solution results as .dat files.

Grid Generator: Pmass uses AWS Lambda function for grid generation.

Simulation queue: Pmass uses AWS SQS service to manage simulation jobs sent by users from Pmass web app to the engine instances.

Simulations: Pmass uses a set of costume designed AWS EC2 instances for simulations. Pmass’s “engine instances” contains compiled Pmass’s engine code.
